Terrifying and Beautiful: Eruption of the Cordón Caulle Vulcano

Even though the latest eruption of the Puyehue-Cordón Caulle volcanic complex, taking place on June 4th 2011, is old hat by now, the photos taken by Chilean photographer Francisco Negroni back then still haven’t ceased to amaze their beholders. Pillars of smoke 10km high, flying rocks, flowing lava, storm clouds, several strokes of lightning…where else do you get to see that all simultaneously? Negroni’s pictures are reminiscent of epic CGI-renderings from the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy rather than of any other place on earth. To be honest, I think these shots are far more impressive than the computer-generated ones of Mordor. When doing a remake (and there are surprisingly plenty of those nowadays…), Peter Jackson should take a page from nature’s and Francisco Negroni’s book. 😉
