Another New Toy: Sigma 35mm f1.4 Art

deutsch_s1

Recently, after a bad attack of G.A.S., I was itching so badly I had no choice but to order the 35/1.4 Art. As Gear Acquisition Syndrome is notoriously not curable, you can’t do anything but learn to live with it. Well, since the lens has arrived, the itching is gone and the pleasure is great. 😉

The first impression: it is a great deal bigger than the 30mm f/1.4 Art. Focal distance-wise, it is certainly slightly longer than the 30, so you’ll have to adapt to that after the DP2M and the 30mm ART. At widest open aperture, the 35mm is perceptibly more contrasty, but how much better the resolution is compared to the smaller Art, I cannot tell just now. Despite the additional weight, it feels just as good on the SD1M as the 30mm. This is what the 35/1.4 Art looks like on the Merrill.

Let’s now move on to the photos. I like the image rendition of the 35mm very much. I am so looking forward to another photo stroll. I think the lens would be even more fun on a full frame SD1M. Hopefully, Sigma springs a surprise and presents exactly this camera at the CP+. 🙂

  2. Back when in 2012, Sigma reinvented itself with its art series for professional-consumer( pro-sumer) photography needs, I didn’t gave it much thought considering the bad quality controls from Sigma and second grade stuff I knew it for( I admit to being unnecessarily obnoxious there).

But then I overheard praises for this glass from a variety of colleagues and friends which prompted me to borrow one and test for myself. After spending a month with it, I have come to agree that this Sigma is indeed a lens worth consideration among the big boys.
