The Chinese website Xitek posted the first benchmark test with the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 Art. In it, four of the currently best 50mm lenses with aperture f/1.4 compete with each other: the Sigma, the Sony Planar T* 50mm f/1.4 ZA SSM, the Nikkor AF-S 58mm f/1.4G and the already legendary Zeiss Otus 55mm f/1.4. The website only just tested middle and corner sharpness and vignetting, though I have to admit that I don’t really grasp the vignetting graph. 🙂
Well, was it just hype when Sigma employees claimed the Art can compete with Otus?
Sigma is the top left, Sony the top right, Nikon below left and Otus below right (click on the images, the blog software scales the pictures and lets them appear blurry):
No, apparently it was no hype!
The crops really look promising. I am looking forward to further, more detailed tests and sample images. As you know, not only sharpness is an issue. Important as well are distortion, bokeh, AF, etc.
