Sigma News & Rumors: List of all upcoming Lenses and Cameras

deutsch_s1

New DP2 Quattro sample images and reviews are published on a daily basis, but we mustn’t forget that Sigma is, above all, a lens manufacturer, and that many new lenses are currently being worked on in Aizu. 😉 Several days ago, Sigma-Rumors posted a list of all lenses and cameras that are rumored to be in the pipeline. The interesting thing about this list is not the lenses and cameras per se (Sigma fans are long familiar with such rumors), but rather the specification of probability offered by the SR admin. As one would expect, the persistent rumor centering on a full frame camera that has been going around for a perceived eternity now is being classified as highly improbable with 0%. 😉 Rumors about the Micro 4/3 camera by Sigma turned out to be wrong with the announcement of the Quattro. However, the question remains whether Sigma will leave it at the 3 DPs or whether one or two further focal lengths are being worked on. The SR admin deems further DPs likely, but I am not so sure about that.

By all means unexpected are the high specified probabilities for 16-20mm f/2 DG, 120-400mm DG OS f/4.5-5.6 Contemporary and 300-600mm DG OS sports lenses. The latter two have only been very sparsely covered, as for the 300-600mm we don’t even know which aperture it will have. When the first rumors about the 16-20mm appeared, I dedicated a blog entry to the lens and voiced my skepticism in regards to the uncommon focal length. I still think that a lens like this only makes sense in a very limited way and that it will most likely remain a patent.

Surprising as well is the low % figure for the 24-70mm f/2 DG Art, which is the most hyped of the rumored lenses. I wouldn’t have thought that UWAs for full frame and APSC, namely the revised 12-24mm f/3.5-5.6 and 10-20mm lenses, are deemed so likely. These lenses were only mentioned a few times in passing, which makes me believe they are being considered, but are apparently (if at all) still in planning.

Based on the numerous reports and statements made on the SD1 Quattro and the 24mm f/1.4 DG Art and 85mm f/1.4 DG Art lenses, it only seems to be a matter of time before these will be announced. If I had to guess, I’d say it will happen at the Photokina or in the next 6-9 months.

Furthermore, 4/3rumors suspects additional mirrorless lenses that are faster than the already available ones. Considering the latest market data pointing to the fact that mirrorless cameras still only sell slowly, it is hard to give credit to this rumor.

  1. This will be interesting, I bought the 35mm 1.4 Art and it’s a truly amazing lens. Sigma has managed to move from the percieved “budget alternative” to a becoming very good option when looking for lenses.

Hi Krister, I agree. I also have the 35/1.4 A and the 18-35/1.8 A, and these are the best lenses I ever had. Not only in regards to IQ, but also build quality, design and price/performance. Sigma is making some excellent stuff as of late.
