In 1989, the Holtorfs started out for Africa with their off-road vehicle. What was planned as an 18-month road trip turned into an epic, 26-year world cruise, similar to Forrest Gump’s who couldn’t stop running after having proceeded this far. In this period, the now 77-year old Upper Bavarian and his late wife Christine traveled 215 countries, covering almost 900.000 km. His Mercedes G Class off-road vehicle, which he fondly calls “Otto” and which hasn’t let him down once during his whole journey, had to be transported over the oceans 41 times with a ship container. After having seen the remotest places such as the Bolivian salt desert and the Himalaya, he returned home last Wednesday. “The thing is done, the world traveled”, Holtorf said in front of the Brandenburger Tor. While “Otto” is being taken to the car museum in Stuttgart, his owner will settle in his Chiemsee cottage.
With his two Leicas (SL and M6), Holtorf captured his adventures. Some of these shots are shown in the following video:
Clearly, this epic journey is an inspiration for any travel photographer out there. J
