In Great Britain, with its advertising campaign Childhood Eye Cancer Trust is aiming to raise awareness for the malignant eye tumor retinoblastoma and a very easy method of diagnosis that costs practically nothing. Unlike many tumors only detected by means of complicated diagnostic procedures and costly diagnostic tools, this so-called “infantile eye tumor” can be diagnosed with the help of any camera or smartphone with built-in flash. If you have any suspicion and would like to have your (grand)children checked, you should first turn off the red-eye removal, since the most succinct symptom of this disease are white or glowing pupils on pictures taken with flash. I attached a screenshot below, so that you can get an idea of what it looks like.

However, please don’t jump to conclusions right away. You should always keep in mind that even the best diagnostic procedure can lead to incorrect results if executed by a lay person. Instead of getting panicky, you should first bring your little ones to see a doctor if the pupils are white rather than red. 🙂
