It can be incredibly hard to find interesting subjects in winter. Even if you happen to find some, the thick blanket of clouds complicates the “painting with light”. Last time I was lucky, but that was the exception that proves the rule. Typical of this time of year is the soft, diffuse light, here you have to choose the lesser of the two evils as a photographer – overexposed sky or underexposed subject. Furthermore, almost every living thing sinks into a deep sleep at low temperatures like this. My favorite subjects, dogs and cats, hide away when it rains or snows. Insects and other crawling or flying little animals won’t show their faces, unlike others, such as the tortula muralis, snowdrops and other plants, that flourish despite the harsh conditions. To find them, however, you have to look a little bit more closely. And you mustn’t shy away from getting your camera dirty. 😉
Alternatively, you can always try finding some subjects within your own four walls. 😉
