This press photo will make you cry – it’s the winning image of the “World Press Photo” Award 2015. It’s certainly one of the saddest winning images of the past few years.
It was shot by Australian photographer Warren Richardson in the night of August 28 2015 at the Serbia-Hungary border. It shows a man passing his baby through the barbed wire fence to save its life. The photographer states that he had to take the picture in the moonlight as the flash would have alarmed the police.
Jury chairman Francis Kohn said that the photo “was so powerful because of its simplicity”. “In particular because of the symbolic power of the barbed wire.”
The “World Press Photo” Award is a renowned photo contest. With his winning image the Australian photographer won a prize of 10,000 Euros. The jury awarded 41 photographers from 21 countries in total. More than 5500 photographers with about 83,000 photos had participated to win prizes in eight categories.
