The rumor factory was working overtime in the last couple of days. It was said that Sigma was going to announce a bokeh monster in the shape of the Sigma 105mm f/1.4 Art, its first macro lens in the Art lineup aka Sigma 70mm f/2.8 and no less than nine (9!) Art lenses for Sony E mount. What sounded too good to be true has been proven correct earlier today. 🙂
The 105mm f/1.4 Art and 70mm f/2.8 Art are completely new, unlike seven of the nine Art lenses for E mount. The former is not only a monster in regard to speed but also size, which the removable tripod collar makes perfectly clear. I don’t know of many portrait lenses with this feature. 😉 Its optical design consists of 17 elements in 12 groups, whereby almost a third of them are special elements (3x FLD, 2x SLD and 1x asph.). Sigma is going to offer this lens for the following mounts: Sigma, Nikon, Canon, Sony E.
In direct comparison the 70mm f/2.8 macro is a bit more down to earth, but it’s hardly a lens of modest design. It consists of 13 elements in 10 groups, with 2 FLD, 2 SLD and 1 aspherical element. Unlike the 105mm Sigma isn’t going to offer the 70mm macro for the Nikon mount, but it will offer it for the following mounts: Sigma, Canon und Sony E. You can check out all the specs by clicking the links to product pages above.
Regarding the seven Art lenses for Sony E mount, these are all modified versions of existing lenses for Canon and Nikon DSLRs:
- 14mm F1.8 DG HSM | Art
- 20mm F1.4 DG HSM | Art
- 24mm F1.4 DG HSM | Art
- 35mm F1.4 DG HSM | Art
- 50mm F1.4 DG HSM | Art
- 85mm F1.4 DG HSM | Art
- 135mm F1.8 DG HSM | Art
The variants for Sony E are going to receive adjustments in terms of AF and lens to body communication, in order to ensure full compatibility (including Fast Hybrid AF, AF-C, IBIS and JPG corrections) with Sony A7 and A9 cameras. In addition Sigma is going to offer its Mount Conversion Service for these lenses as well. This means that in the future you will be able to send your CaNikon lenses to Sigma to be made compatible with the Sony E mount and vice versa.
